Addressing Myopia Early

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common vision condition that can affect your child’s distance vision at an early age. Through children’s eye exams and myopia control methods, we want to help your children control the progression of myopia and enhance their quality of life.

We offer myopia control methods such as ortho-k lenses, MiSight contacts, and low-dose atropine eye drops.

What Is Myopia Control?

While standard eyeglasses and contact lenses can help address the visual challenges caused by myopia, they do not always address the root cause or slow its progression. That’s where myopia control can make a difference.

Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend one or more of the following myopia control methods:

  • Ortho-k contact lenses
  • MiSight contact lenses
  • Low-dose atropine drops

Does Your Child Need Help with Myopia?

Myopia can be stressful for your children, and there are some common signs and symptoms you can look out for, including:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Blurry vision when looking at faraway objects
  • Squinting to see distant objects
  • Eye strain
  • Sitting too close to screens

If you notice some of these signs and are concerned about myopia affecting your child in school and other aspects of their life, a comprehensive eye exam can help us determine if myopia control is the right next step.

The Link Between Vision & Learning

When your children are having trouble with their sight, it can impact their daily life at school and cause several challenges, such as difficulty reading from a distance, seeing the board in class, and participating in sports and other activities.

Vision-related learning challenges can lead to stress and confusion. If left undiagnosed, those issues may cause them to fall behind their friends.

With professional care and treatment options for myopia, such as MiSight contact lenses and ortho-k, we can support your child both inside and outside the classroom.

MiSight Contact Lenses & Other Strategies

MiSight 1 day lenses are soft contact lenses that can help manage myopia for children. These lenses use ActivControl technology to help correct and slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8–12.

MiSight lenses can correct nearsightedness by reducing the eye’s refractive power and making it possible for light to focus correctly on the retina.

However, we also offer different myopia control methods for different needs such as orthokeratology and low-dose atropine drops. The first step, though, is always a comprehensive eye exam, so we can determine which myopia control method is right for your child.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, involves the use of rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight to mold your child’s cornea and help reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses throughout the day.

Ortho-k lenses can be a great option for children managing mild to moderate myopia. These lenses are designed to work by flattening the cornea and reducing the eye’s refractive power to slow myopia progression.

Ortho-k lenses are custom-made for each child’s specific eye shape and prescription.

Studies have shown that a low dose of atropine in eye drop form can help slow myopia progression in children to reduce their risk of severe nearsightedness.

Low-dose atropine drops can suppress the eye’s growth to slow myopia progression. This treatment is typically prescribed as a daily drop, used in the evening before bedtime.

Myopia Control Based on Corneal Topography

Corneal topography is a noninvasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer structure of the eye.

For myopia control, corneal topography can help Dr. Ferreira get an accurate image of the cornea’s shape. This information helps us diagnose the degree of myopia affecting someone and plan appropriate treatment strategies. We can also monitor the progression of myopia over time and precisely fit ortho-k lenses with the use of corneal topography.
